- 3 cups of chana dal or yellow split peas (use whole, not split)
- 4 Red chilies (crushed into a paste)
- 1 /2 tsp turmeric
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/4 cup grated coconut
- 1/2 Tbsp urad dal (split black lentils)
- Water Salt to taste
Step 1: Rinse the chana dal and boil in 4 cups of water until soft.
Step 2: Add the cumin seeds and urad dal and boil for 5 minutes.
Step 3: Add the curry leaves, mustard seeds, green chilies, and turmeric to a food processor or blender. Process until smooth.
Step 4: Add the processed mixture and salt to the dal, then cook on low heat for 2 hours, occasionally stirring (every 10 minutes or so).
